Scientists search for extraterrestrial life signs in comet Atlas, an interstellar object that has generated speculation about its nature and origin. The SETI Institute claimed that it scanned the object and found that, ultimately, it appears to be a natural object. The researchers argue that the finding is useful and could help us better understand what we might see if we were to examine an object created by extraterrestrial life. With time, our own Voyager spacecraft will become extraterrestrial artifacts in other star systems, observed Sofia Sheikh, lead author of the new article. The researcher highlights that, consequently, it is important to know the natural distribution of interstellar objects in order to identify any anomalies that one day could be a sign of an artificial interstellar object. The researchers examined the comet 3I/Atlas for eight hours with the Allen Telescope Array in California. They observed it in a range of different radio signal frequencies, with a particular emphasis on examining those that do not occur in nature. They found 74 million narrowband signals, of the type that are believed to be produced only by artificial technology. But after eliminating human interference and tracking those that followed the movement of the interstellar object, only 200 remained and were determined to come from Earth or our own satellites. According to the researchers, the findings demonstrate that we could be prepared to detect such signals if they existed, as well as demonstrating the speed and efficiency with which our teams can search for them when an interesting object is detected. The results of 3I/Atlas show how realistic it is to detect a signal with the technology we have today, said Valeria García López, co-author. That's why it's important to continue searching for technosignatures, even in objects that we may not expect to emit signals. The work is presented in a new article, 'A Search for Radio Technosignatures from Interstellar Object 3I/Atlas with the Allen Telescope Array', published in The Astronomical Journal.
